You ever get a DM that makes you want to yeet your phone into the sun?

Something like:

“Hey [First Name], hope you’re doing well! I help business owners 10x their revenue in 30 days. Want to hop on a quick call?”

Straight to the trash.

Or worse—just “Hey {Name} what’s up?”

No context. No value. Just a sad, lonely “Hey {Name} what’s up? ” drifting in the digital void, begging for a response.

Most solopreneurs, whether you’re a coach, freelancer, or agency owner are out here treating DMs like a cold-calling script from 1998. Then they wonder why their inbox is a ghost town.

If you want to close high-ticket clients in the DMs without getting ignored, you need a better approach. I teach my private students a simple system to find dream prospects, stand out, and close deals without hopping on sales calls. Here’s how it works.

0. Warm Them Up First

Don’t slide into cold DMs like a sketchy stranger in a trench coat.

Engage with your prospect’s content first, comment on their posts, share their stuff, or like their stories for a few days.

When you finally DM, they’ll recognize your name, and your message won’t feel like it’s coming from nowhere.

1. Get Specific

Most people send messages like this:

"Hey [First Name], I love what you’re doing! Just wanted to connect."

Lazy. Your prospect can smell it from a mile away.

Take five minutes to creep on their profile (in a non-weird way). What’s their latest post? Did they just hit a milestone? Mention it.

Good DM vs. Bad DM

Bad : “Hey [Name], love your work! Want to connect?”

Good : “Hey [Name], saw your post about launching your course, huge congrats! Curious if you’re finding it tricky to get consistent signups. I’ve got a tactic that doubled my last launch—want me to send it over?”

The good one’s specific, low-effort to reply to, and opens the door to a real convo.

It shows you’re paying attention, which makes them feel good and sparks a conversation.

2. Reduce Friction for the Response

I was watching a YouTube video the other day where the creator talked about DMing "like a millennial." Born in 1989, so I’m basically a pro at this.

The point? Make your messages short, casual, and easy to respond to.

DMs should read like texts:

  • Quick.

  • Witty.

  • To the point.

No multi-paragraph pitches.

When there’s less effort required to reply, people actually do.

3. Cross-Examine

The most common DM mistake? Asking generic questions like:

“What’s the biggest challenge you’re facing?”

Logical? Sure. Effective? Nope.

Most prospects don’t know their exact problem. If they did, they’d already be solving it.

Instead, guide the conversation by giving them options:

“Are you struggling more with lead flow or converting the leads you already have?”

This does two things:

  1. Narrows their focus so they don’t have to think too hard.

  2. If the answer is neither, they’ll correct you, giving you insight into their real challenge.

4. Always Make an Ask

Most solopreneurs end their DMs with… nothing.

No clear next step.

That’s a mistake.

Every message should create an open loop:

  • Continue the conversation to gather more intel.

  • Pivot to a soft pitch.

No pressure. No desperation. Just a natural next step.

Example in Action

One of my students, Sarah, used this system to land a $5k client in two weeks. Her DM?

“Hey [Name], saw your recent post about scaling your e-comm store, congrats on hitting 10k followers! Curious if you’re finding it tough to turn those followers into buyers. Got a quick tip that might help, want me to share?”

Short, specific, and led to a reply within an hour. By day three, they were discussing her services. No sales call needed.

What If They Don’t Respond?

Not every DM will get a reply, and that’s okay.

If they ghost you, don’t double-message like a desperate ex.

Instead, engage with their content (like their posts or stories) for a few days, then try again with a new angle.

And avoid these pitfalls:

  • Sending the same copy-paste DM to everyone.

  • Getting pushy if they say they’re not interested.

  • Forgetting to follow up after a week if they seem warm but don’t commit.

Why DMs Are Your Secret Weapon

Selling in the DMs is the fastest way to get rich (if you do it right). If your messages aren’t landing, it’s not because DM selling doesn’t work, it’s because your approach is off.

  • Warm up your prospects.

  • Make your intro specific.

  • Keep messages short and casual.

  • Lead the conversation.

  • Always have an ask.

Do this consistently, and you’ll never need sales calls again.
